Pierce Smith is a graphic artist based in Cape Neddick, Maine. With a focus on sustainability, he primarily uses found materials. With a focus on sustainability, he primarily uses found materials as the basis for his decorative works. His goal is to extend the life of existing resources and break the waste cycle by giving once discarded items new value.
These signs started out as part of an 8-foot panel of dog-eared pine fencing, found on the side of the road in Cape Neddick. Once all the nails were removed and the pickets had been separated, cleaned, cut and lightly sanded, Pierce applied the lettering by hand. His palette has so far been restricted to the five colors of paint leftover from previous projects. The colorways are inspired by lobster buoys, giving a nod to the maritime culture of Maine. Once each line has been drawn in ink, the piece is sprayed with a clear cover of acrylic coating. The weathered wood evokes a nostalgic look, while the bright colors and sharp angles give the signs a modern feel.
Each sign has a picture frame hanger and rubber bumpers on the backside for hanging. Each sign is signed and dated by the artist.
