The Scupper 14 kayak, made by Swell, combines the ease of access and non-restrictive seating and storage configuration of a sit-on-top with the speed and tracking of a sea kayak.
The Scupper 14 blends the deck architecture of a surf ski with the traditional hull shape of the original sit-on-top kayak.
Designer Tim Niemier's concept of the Scupper was to lower the footwells below the waterline, which had never been done in a sit-on-top. This would lower the center of gravity, creating leverage, shrink the paddle entry zone, allow for superior body position and a more narrow hull.
