How to install the Honu Byron, Fairlight, and Sorrento fin into the fin box

Congratulations on your new Honu paddleboard. Chances are you encountered a fin and one of two assembly kits used to attach your fin to your Byron 9’8, Byron 10’6, Fairlight 12’6, Sorrento 12’6 or 11’3 or another model meant for all-round or touring enjoyment.

The latest fin attachment system uses a thumb pin, spring, plate, and side screw for the plate, and an allen tool for mounting the plate to the end of the pin. The benefit is so that you are not having to assemble and disassemble the thumb screw onto or from the threaded plate (nut) like you had to with the old design. This often led to frustration and parts loss.

Here’s how to install your Honu board fin using the newest version of components:

1. Assemble the thumb pin using the spring between the head and the fin base

2. Then while pressing (compressing) the pin and spring firmly, attach the plate using the allen wrench (included) and screw — screwing into the pin’s recess (divot).

3. Then, with the narrow side of the plate running width wise with the fin’s width (so not to stick out from the fin’s sides), slide the fin into the top half of the fin box.

4. Then, press the back half of the fin all the way so that it is completely inside the fin box.

5. Then, rotate the thumb pin 45’ to rotate and thus lock the plate into place. Be sure that the side cutouts within the plate are facing you (up position) so that the singular-planed base of the plate faces the interior of the fin box.

The benefit with this design is that you only have to assemble the pin+plate+spring+screw once. It becomes a twist and slide kind of install and uninstall taking only a few seconds after you first setup the pin assembly.
