Crescent Moon Snowshoes Retailer and Rental Center | Buy or Book Today
We chose Crescent Moon Snowshoes as our sole snowshoeing equipment brand based on 30 years of professional and personal experience, having sold, rented, serviced, or used a number of popular brands including MSR, Tubbs/LL Bean, Atlas, and more.
The issues we wanted to solve by migrating from our current fleet to Crescent Moon (primarily the aluminum series) include:
- Durability. Impact and abrasion resistance to withstand the range of conditions here in the northeast including variable ice, bare spots, rock, debris, powder, frozen granular, and powder. Frequent wear and exertion on components from climbing the steeps or carrying larger weight loads.
- Longevity. Atlas snowshoes work well overall, however, rivets were often needing replacement using industrial grade hardware and tools difficult to access. Tubbs (makers of LL Bean) uses low grade plastics in their decking materials which, if used and stored frequently in the cold, degrade quickly, becoming brittle and chipping easily with use. MSR straps and bindings exhibited the same frustrating issues.
- Ergonomics. Your foot shape and footwear type requires a binding that can adjust accordingly. A binding should not cause pressure points on the balls of your feet or instep. It should allow for a wide range of boot shapes including hiking, pack, ski, and snowboarding boots. The snowshoes’ frame shape should promote a natural stride by tapering enough to prevent one shoe from stepping onto the edges of the other while walking.
- Ease of Use. Bindings should be easy enough to adjust that, within a quick moment of time, it can be single handedly tightened without fuss. Note: The Eva Foam series of snowshoes are the lightest in the world, perfect for those looking for a feather light feel or with mobility challenges such as those with a disability or age related limitations.
- Floatation and Maneuverability. Many brands sacrifice the primary purpose of snowshoeing which is to create adequate floatation atop or within the upper layer of snow. A teardrop shape provides weight distribution where it is needed most and leaves out excess materials mass where it is not, thus reducing weight and allowing for a more manageable walking experience. Traction is critical, however, full length traction components add more weight than is typically a net benefit to the user; micro-spikes and other footwear crampons have their place...
- Warranty and Manufacturer Support. It was immediately obvious that Crescent Moon is easy to communicate with and would do the right thing to keep us and our customers moving. Plus, a 6 year warranty on their aluminum series exceeds industry average. And they provide parts at no cost to us so we can be a local resource for the very rare case a set of shoes needs a warranty repair.
- Value. In our research, we believe the average user will experience between 3X and 5X more lifespan before repair or replacement is necessary, as compared to other brands. This technically means the lowest cost per use of any brand we have examined. And we believe most customers will find about 50% less frustration and perhaps 3X as much enjoyment using Crescent Moon snowshoes than other brands on the market.
- Designed and Built in the USA, Boulder, CO. By men and women who live and breath winter experiences and have a consistently positive reputation among mountain guides, school programs, and newbies alike.
- Award Winning. You name the publication--chances are, their products placed at or near the top within their category.
- Sustainability and Recycling. Crescent Moon is motivated by making products that last, use materials that do not break down easily and leech into the environment, and use minimal chemicals as part of their makeup. They accept snowshoes that have reached the end of their life (15-20 years+) to be recycled into new or different products.
Crescent Moon Aluminum Series Highlights:
- Single pull loop binding. The all foot encompassing binding is made of a flexible polymer which wraps around your foot and provides excellent support and comfort and won't come out of adjustment.
- Stainless steel traction from toe to heel using three sets of claws or cleats.
- Crescent Moon is the only snowshoe to have a toe claw which is important for digging in when climbing hills or mountains and helps with push-off when hiking or running.
- Unique fold method of attaching the decking to the frame using machined rivets to prevent excessive force on the connection parts, preventing failures.
- The decking is lightweight, durable, highly abrasion resistant, flexes as opposed to cracking, and quiet--noticeably different from plastic snowshoes.
- The frames are made with either 1/2" or 5/8" diameter 6063 aircraft grade aluminum tubing and are TIG welded by hand for strength.
